I think folks who don’t work from home might believe that the folks who do work from home take the opportunity to work in their jammies all day! Now, this may very well be true but if I could offer up one piece of advice to those who work from home it would be…. get dressed!
By all means have a coffee in bed, scroll through pictures of puppies on Pinterest or catch up on some important questionnaire’s on your BuzzFeed but then get up, get showered and dressed and start your day much like people in the regular working world.
I would never say that I’ve never worked in my pajama’s but when I do, I feel like a slob and I don’t get stuff done. I watch too much E news and make too many cups of tea and then it’s 4pm and I’m wallowing in a pool of self pity.
Working from home has many perks but also many distractions too, so it’s important to have some routine and write plenty of to-do lists. I use a highlighter to highlight tasks I have completed so I can see what’s getting done.
A good work space is also key; my desk is actually a door that I painted white which sits on top of some A frames from ‘Build it’. Fresh flowers, good light and some nice books and stationary will also make your work space inviting and hopefully productive.
What started as a quick reference to US time zones (for my other day job) has developed into a sort of ‘mood board’ on the wall with pictures of people I love and images that inspire me… surrounding your environment with inspiration is good.
I hope you enjoy snooping around my office…
